In the morning, we will head to the Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple. Built in the 11th century by the Chola dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of India's largest and most magnificent temples, with an impressive 66-metre-tall vimana (temple tower). The complex also features a massive Nandi statue, intricate carvings of Hindu deities and mythological scenes, and a well-maintained garden. Afternoon can be spent exploring the local handicraft shops, which offer exquisite Thanjavur paintings, bronze sculptures, and silk saris. In the evening, we can enjoy a cultural performance of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu.
On day two, we will visit the Thanjavur Palace and Art Gallery, which was once the residence of the Nayak and Maratha kings. Now converted into a museum, the palace exhibits a vast collection of antiques, weapons, musical instruments, and sculptures, providing an insight into the region's rich history and culture. The adjacent art gallery houses a stunning collection of bronze icons, stone sculptures, and paintings. In the afternoon, we can explore the nearby Schwartz Church, a 250-year-old monument that reflects Indo-Saracenic architecture, or take a stroll in the nearby Sivaganga Park. In the evening, we can visit the local bazaar and try some delicious local delicacies like thalassery biryani, masala dosa, and filter coffee.
If you have time, you can also consider visiting the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, Serfoji Mahal Library, and the Kumbakonam Mahamaham tank, which are all located within an hour's drive from Tanjavoor. For a side trip, you may want to visit the nearby town of Kumbakonam, which is known for its numerous temples, or take a day trip to the hill station of Yercaud, which is around 4 hours away. To maximize your fun, you can also participate in a traditional cooking class, learn the art of kolam (rangoli), or go on a cycling tour of the city.
