6-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Vaishnodevi, Katra, Patnitop, Pahalgam, and Amritsar in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Vaishnodevi
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Katra

    In the morning, take a helicopter ride from Katra to Vaishnodevi and embark on a spiritual journey to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. The trek to the shrine is around 12 km, and it will take around 6-7 hours. The trek can be customized according to your preference, and you can hire ponies, palkis or helicopters to reach the shrine. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Bhairavnath Temple and Ardh Kuwari Cave. In the evening, attend the evening Aarti at the Vaishno Devi Temple.

  2. Day 2: Patnitop
    2 hours 45 minutes (100 km) from Vaishnodevi

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to Patnitop and enjoy the beautiful views of the Himalayas on the way. Visit the Naag Temple, which is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site, and then head to the famous Patnitop hill station, known for its scenic landscapes and adventure activities. Spend the afternoon doing activities such as paragliding, skiing, and trekking. In the evening, relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset at the Shiva Garh Meadows.

  3. Day 3: Pahalgam
    4 hours (160 km) from Patnitop

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to Pahalgam, which is known for its pristine natural beauty and is often referred to as the “Valley of Shepherds.” On the way, visit the famous Awantipora ruins, which are ancient Hindu temples. After reaching Pahalgam, visit the Betaab Valley, which is a popular spot for Bollywood movie shooting and also enjoy activities like river rafting and trekking. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll in the local market and try some local Kashmiri food.

  4. Day 4: Amritsar
    8 hours (300 km) from Pahalgam

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to Amritsar and visit the Golden Temple, which is one of the most sacred places for Sikhs. After visiting the temple, head to the Wagah Border to witness the Beating Retreat Ceremony, a famous military practice performed daily by the Indian and Pakistani soldiers. In the evening, visit the Jallianwala Bagh, a historical landmark that commemorates the massacre of hundreds of Indian civilians by British troops in 1919.

  5. Day 5: Amritsar
    Within Amritsar

    In the morning, visit the Akal Takht, which is one of the five takhts of Sikhism and a significant pilgrimage site. Then, visit the Partition Museum, which tells the stories of the partition of India in 1947. Spend the afternoon exploring the local markets and trying out some local street food like Amritsari Kulcha and Lassi. In the evening, attend the Gurbani Kirtan at the Golden Temple.

  6. Day 6: Katra
    7 hours 30 minutes (250 km) from Amritsar

    In the morning, drive back to Katra, and on the way, stop at the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple at the Adhkuwari temple, which is believed to be the place where Mata Vaishno Devi meditated for nine months. After reaching Katra, spend the afternoon exploring the town, visiting the Banganga Temple, and shopping for souvenirs. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner and relax before departing the next day.

Recommendations

If you have an additional day, consider visiting the Amarnath Cave, which is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site. You can also take a day trip to Srinagar and enjoy a shikara ride on the Dal Lake or a visit to the Mughal Gardens. To maximize your fun, try out some adventure activities like bungee jumping and zip-lining in Patnitop.
