Two-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Ujjain in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
9 minutes (1.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site. In the morning, visit the temple for the Bhasmarti ceremony, where the lingam is anointed with sacred ash. After the ceremony, explore the temple complex and its surroundings. In the afternoon, go to the Vedh Shala Observatory, one of the oldest observatories in India, and learn about ancient astronomical instruments. In the evening, head to Ram Ghat for the Narmada Aarti, a beautiful ceremony that takes place on the banks of the Narmada River.

  2. Day 2: Kalideh Palace and Kaliadeh Pahad
20 minutes (6.4 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

In the morning, visit Kalideh Palace, where you can see a collection of ancient artifacts, sculptures, and paintings. Afterward, climb Kaliadeh Pahad, a small hill that offers a panoramic view of the city and the Shipra River. In the afternoon, head to Bhartrihari Caves, where the 11th-century poet Bhartrihari is believed to have meditated. The caves are located on the banks of the Shipra River and offer a peaceful and serene atmosphere. In the evening, take a stroll in the Chintaman Ganesh Temple complex, which is beautifully lit up at night.

Recommendations

Other attractions to consider in Ujjain include the Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna is said to have studied as a child, and the Harsiddhi Temple, a Shaktipeeth temple dedicated to the goddess Harsiddhi. If you have time, consider a day trip to nearby Mandu, a ruined city with a rich history and beautiful architecture. To maximize your fun in Ujjain, try the local street food, such as poha and jalebi, and shop for traditional handicrafts, such as Maheshwari sarees and leather jutti shoes.
