2-Day Itinerary for Exploring Chennai

  1. Day 1: Kapaleeshwarar Temple
15 minutes (4.2 km) from Chennai Central Railway Station

Start your morning off with a visit to the iconic Kapaleeshwarar Temple, one of the most popular and oldest temples in Chennai. You'll be amazed by the Dravidian-style architecture with towering gopurams, intricate carvings, and vibrant paintings. Make sure to take off your shoes before entering the temple premises. Afternoon is the best time to visit where you can see the temple's sculptures in natural light. After your visit, head to the nearby Dakshin restaurant for a delicious South Indian lunch. In the evening, visit the nearby Elliot's Beach for a leisurely stroll and watch the sun go down.

  2. Day 1: Fort St. George
30 minutes (9.2 km) from Kapaleeshwarar Temple

In the afternoon, explore the magnificent Fort St. George that was built by the British East India Company in 1644. It's now home to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Fort Museum, where you can learn about the history of British rule in India. Make sure to check out the St. Mary's Church that's located within the fort premises, and also don't miss the 46-metre-tall flagstaff that is made from teakwood. After your visit, head to the nearby Amethyst Cafe for some tea and snacks.

  3. Day 2: Government Museum
20 minutes (7.5 km) from Chennai Central Railway Station

Start your day by visiting the Government Museum that has a vast collection of artefacts from the Chola, Gupta, and Vijayanagar empires. You can see everything from ancient coins, sculptures, paintings, and even a 1,500-year-old mummy! The museum also has a section dedicated to modern art, and it's a great place to learn about the history and culture of Chennai and Tamil Nadu. After your visit, head to the nearby Murugan Idli Shop for some delicious South Indian breakfast.

  4. Day 2: Marina Beach
10 minutes (3.2 km) from Government Museum

In the evening, visit the famous Marina Beach that stretches for 13 km along the Bay of Bengal. It's one of the longest urban beaches in the world and a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. You can take a long walk along the shore, watch the sunset, and even try some street food from the vendors. If you're feeling adventurous, take a dip in the sea, but be careful of the strong currents. After your visit, head to the nearby Mahamudra restaurant for some healthy vegan dinner.
