Two-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Ujjain in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    5 minutes (0.5 km) from Ujjain Junction railway station

    Morning: Start your day by visiting the Mahakaleshwar Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple opens at 4:00 AM, and you can attend the first worship of the Shiva Linga, known as the Bhasma Aarti. Witnessing the ritual is a surreal experience that will leave you spellbound.

    Afternoon: For lunch, you can head to any of the local restaurants near the temple to taste some delicious street food, such as poha, samosa, kachori, and jalebi. Post-lunch, you can visit the Sandipani Ashram, which is located 10 minutes (2.5 km) away from the temple. The ashram is famous for imparting education to Lord Krishna and Sudama in ancient times.

    Evening: Spend your evening at the Kshipra River Ghat, situated 20 minutes (4 km) away from the ashram, to witness the grand evening aarti and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. You can also take a boat ride and enjoy the serene beauty of the river.

  2. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple and Bhartrihari Caves
    15 minutes (3.4 km) from Kshipra River Ghat

    Morning: Begin your day by visiting the Kal Bhairav Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Bhairav, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for its unique architecture and history. After darshan, you can have breakfast at any local restaurant near the temple.

    Afternoon: Your next stop is the Bhartrihari Caves, located 10 minutes (2.1 km) away from the temple. The caves are named after Bhartrihari, who was the stepbrother of King Vikramaditya. The place is serene and peaceful, and you can spend some time meditating and admiring the sculptures.

    Evening: In the evening, you can visit the Vedh Shala Observatory, which is 15 minutes (3.5 km) away from the caves. The observatory was established in the 17th century and is a perfect place to witness the grandeur of astronomy. You can witness the sunset and enjoy the view of the stars and planets through the telescope.
