Nature-Lover's 3-Day Mumbai Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Sanjay Gandhi National Park
    30 minutes (14 miles) from Mumbai Central

    Start your day exploring the lush Sanjay Gandhi National Park, home to more than 270 species of birds, deer, leopards, and other wildlife. Take a morning safari to spot some wildlife, followed by a picnic lunch by the serene Tulsi Lake. In the afternoon, hike to the Kanheri Caves, a group of 109 Buddhist caves carved out of the rocky hills. End the day with a sunset trek to the highest point in the park, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Mumbai's skyline.

  2. Day 2: Elephanta Caves
    1 hour (11 miles) from Sanjay Gandhi National Park

    Take a morning ferry to the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island. Explore the seven ancient caves dedicated to Lord Shiva, featuring intricate sculptures and carvings. Afterward, enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the island's many restaurants. In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk along the island's beaches, or rent a kayak and explore the island's coastline. End the day with a relaxing sunset cruise back to Mumbai.

  3. Day 3: Karnala Bird Sanctuary
    1 hour 15 minutes (29 miles) from Elephanta Caves

    Start your day early with a trip to the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, a protected area known for its diverse birdlife, including over 200 species of resident and migratory birds. Take a guided birdwatching tour or hike to the Karnala Fort, a hilltop fortification with stunning views of the surrounding forests and mountains. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic lunch and relax by the forest streams. End the day with a visit to the nearby Karnala Fort, a popular spot for sunset and stargazing.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Kanheri Caves early in the morning to avoid crowds.
