Kedarnath: A 4-Day Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Kedarnath Temple
    Located in Kedarnath, 19 minutes (8.9 km) from Sonprayag

    In the morning, visit the famous Kedarnath Temple, located at an altitude of 3,583 meters above sea level. It is one of the four holy shrines of Hinduism and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Afternoon, explore the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to numerous endangered species such as musk deer, snow leopard, and Himalayan black bear. In the evening, attend the Kedarnath Aarti, a Hindu ritual performed every day at the temple.

  2. Day 2: Vasuki Tal
    Located in Kedarnath, 3 hours (8.5 km) from Kedarnath Temple

    Start your day early and embark on a trek to Vasuki Tal, a high altitude lake surrounded by breathtaking scenery. During the trek, you will pass through scenic meadows and dense forests. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic by the lake and take a dip in its crystal-clear water. Return to Kedarnath by evening.

  3. Day 3: Gandhi Sarovar
    Located in Sonprayag, 1 hour 30 minutes (25 km) from Kedarnath

    Take a scenic drive to Sonprayag and embark on a trek to Gandhi Sarovar, a high altitude lake named after Mahatma Gandhi. It is a challenging trek, but the breathtaking scenery is worth the effort. In the afternoon, visit the Triyuginarayan Temple, which is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva and Parvati got married. Return to Kedarnath by evening.

  4. Day 4: Sonprayag
    Located in Sonprayag, 1 hour 19 minutes (21 km) from Kedarnath

    On your last day, visit Sonprayag and explore the scenic beauty of the place. Take a dip in the holy waters of the Mandakini River. In the afternoon, visit the Guptkashi Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti, a Hindu ritual performed every day at the bank of the Mandakini River.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, visit the nearby town of Gaurikund and take a dip in its hot water springs. You can also visit the Kedarnath Museum, which houses a collection of ancient artifacts related to Hinduism. For adventure enthusiasts, there are various trekking options available in the region.
