A war memorial located in the heart of the city, the India Gate is a must-visit for first-time visitors to Delhi. The names of 13,300 Indian soldiers who died in World War I have been inscribed on its walls.

  2. 10:30AM: Qutub Minar
30 minutes (16.7 km) from India Gate

The Qutub Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and at 73 metres, it is the world's tallest brick minaret. The surrounding complex also houses the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, the oldest surviving mosque in India.

The Red Fort was built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It served as the residence of the Mughal emperors for almost 200 years, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Humayun's Tomb is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is often considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal. Built in the 16th century, it is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun, and also houses the graves of his wives and other family members.

  6. 6:00PM: Akshardham Temple
    30 minutes (13.1 km) from Humayun's Tomb

The Akshardham Temple is a relatively new addition to Delhi's list of attractions, having been built in 2005. It is a stunning temple complex that showcases Indian culture and spirituality, and also includes a musical fountain show in the evening.

Recommendations

Delhi has many attractions and experiences that we couldn't include in a single day itinerary. If you have more time, you might want to visit the Lotus Temple, the Jama Masjid, or the National Museum. You could also take a side trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, or to Jaipur to experience the vibrant culture of Rajasthan. To make the most of your day, we recommend hiring a private driver or taking a guided tour.
