3-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary for Ujjain Omkareshwar in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (2.5 km) from Ujjain Junction railway station

    Begin the day early by visiting the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Witness the Bhasma Aarti, a unique and sacred ritual where the idol of Lord Shiva is adorned with ash. After breakfast, explore the nearby Harsiddhi Temple, dedicated to the goddess Parvati. Afterwards, visit the Kal Bhairav Temple, known for its unique offerings and folklore. In the evening, take a stroll around the Ram Ghat on the Kshipra river and attend the daily evening aarti.

  2. Day 2: Omkareshwar Temple
    1 hour 40 minutes (77.2 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Leave early for a day trip to the Omkareshwar Temple, located on an island in the Narmada river. Take a boat ride to the temple and explore the ancient architecture and intricate carvings. Afterwards, visit the nearby Siddhnath Temple, known for its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views of the river. On the way back to Ujjain, stop by the historic town of Maheshwar and visit the Ahilya Fort and the Maheshwar Temple.

  3. Day 3: Bhartrihari Caves and Sandipani Ashram
    20 minutes (5.1 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start the day by visiting the Bhartrihari Caves, located on the banks of the Shipra river. These ancient caves are believed to be the meditation spot of the great philosopher, Bhartrihari. Afterward, head to the Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna and Sudama studied under Guru Sandipani. Explore the ashram and learn about the ancient Vedic education system. In the evening, take a leisurely walk around the Chintaman Ganesh Temple and enjoy some local delicacies in the nearby market.

For a side trip, head to the nearby town of Mandu and visit the Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, and other historic sites.
