Exploring Guwahati in July 2023: City Experiences

  1. Day 1: Kamakhya Temple
15 minutes (5.5 km) from Guwahati Railway Station

Start your day early with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in India. Dedicated to the goddess of fertility, this temple attracts thousands of pilgrims every day. Marvel at the unique architecture of the temple and witness the morning aarti (prayer ceremony). Afterward, enjoy a hearty breakfast of traditional Assamese food at the nearby Uruka Cafeteria. Spend the afternoon exploring the nearby Assam State Museum, which houses a vast collection of artefacts ranging from prehistoric times to the present day. End your day with a sunset river cruise along the Brahmaputra river.

  2. Day 2: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Assam State Zoo
1 hour 30 minutes (53.2 km) from Kamakhya Temple

Embark on a morning safari at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to witness the Indian one-horned rhinoceros in its natural habitat. Afterward, head to the Assam State Zoo to meet some of Assam's other wildlife, such as tigers, clouded leopards, and elephants. For lunch, try out some local street food at Fancy Bazaar. Spend the afternoon exploring the historic Saraighat Bridge, a symbol of Assam's struggle for independence. End your day with a visit to the Navagraha temple, which houses nine separate shrines dedicated to the nine celestial bodies of Hindu astrology.

Recommendations

Other must-visit attractions in Guwahati include the Umananda Temple, located on an island in the Brahmaputra river, and the Guwahati Planetarium, which offers an immersive learning experience for all ages. If you have time, take a side trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kaziranga National Park, home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros population.
