5-Day Itinerary for Banaras in December 2023

  1. Day 1: Kashi Vishwanath Temple
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Assi Ghat

    In the morning, witness the early morning Aarti at Assi Ghat. Afterward, proceed to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Spend the afternoon exploring the temple and the surrounding area. Head back to Assi Ghat to watch the evening Aarti.

  2. Day 2: Ramnagar Fort
    30 minutes (5.5 miles) from Kashi Vishwanath Temple

    Start your day early and visit Ramnagar Fort. The fort holds great historical importance since it has been the home of the royal family of Banaras for generations. In the afternoon, visit Sankat Mochan Temple. Spend some time exploring the temple and its surroundings.

  3. Day 3: Dhamekh Stupa & Sarnath Museum
    30 minutes (7.5 miles) from Sankat Mochan Temple

    Head to Sarnath and visit Dhamekh Stupa, which is one of the most famous Buddhist stupas in the world. Spend the afternoon at the Sarnath Museum to learn more about the history of Sarnath. If you have time, visit the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar.

  4. Day 4: Bharat Kala Bhavan & Manikarnika Ghat
    30 minutes (5.4 miles) from Dhamekh Stupa

    In the morning, explore the Banaras Hindu University campus and visit Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum. Afterward, visit the iconic Manikarnika Ghat and take a boat ride on the river Ganges. Spend the evening exploring the local markets and trying the street food.

  5. Day 5: Tulsi Manas Temple & Durga Temple
    20 minutes (2.8 miles) from Manikarnika Ghat

    Start your day by visiting the Tulsi Manas Temple, a popular Hindu temple in Banaras. Later, visit the Durga Temple, which is dedicated to the Goddess Durga. Spend the afternoon exploring the local shops and markets before heading back home.

Recommendations

Make sure to try some of the famous Banarasi paan and sweets while exploring the local markets. If you have time, consider visiting the nearby Chunar Fort or Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary for a day trip. Don't forget to take a dip in the holy river Ganges at one of the ghats.
