3-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary for Ujjain in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the most famous and revered temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the temple houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas that are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. You can start your day here with the morning aarti and seek blessings from the deity. The temple is crowded during the day, so it's best to visit in the early hours of the morning.

  2. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple and Bhartrihari Caves
20 minutes (4.5 miles) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

Start your day with a visit to the Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva's fiercest form. The temple has a rustic and ancient charm to it and is visited by many devotees. Afterward, visit the nearby Bhartrihari Caves, where the famous philosopher, Bhartrihari meditated and wrote his famous works. These caves are located on the banks of the Shipra river and offer a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Spend your evening exploring the local markets and trying out the street food.

  3. Day 3: Vedh Shala (Observatory) and Sandipani Ashram
15 minutes (3.6 miles) from Kal Bhairav Temple

Visit the Vedh Shala (Observatory), an ancient astronomical observatory that was built in the 17th century. It has a collection of rare astronomical instruments and is known for its precision in predicting the positions of celestial bodies. Afterward, visit the nearby Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna and Sudama were said to have studied. The ashram has a vast area and offers a peaceful and spiritual experience. In the evening, attend the prayer ceremony (aarti) at the Harsiddhi Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Shakti.

Recommendations

Don't miss the opportunity to attend the world-famous Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years in Ujjain (next in 2028).

You can also consider a side trip to the nearby Omkareshwar Temple, located on an island in the Narmada River.

Maximize your fun by trying out the local delicacies like poha, jalebi, samosa, and kachori. You can also shop for traditional handicrafts and textiles at the local markets.
