Two-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Thiruvananthapuram in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple
20 minutes (5.5 km) from Trivandrum International Airport

In the morning, visit the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the most famous landmark in Thiruvananthapuram. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is a stunning example of Dravidian architecture. Spend some time admiring the intricate carvings and murals on the temple walls. In the afternoon, head to the Kuthira Malika Palace Museum, located just a 10-minute walk from the temple. This 18th-century palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma and is a great example of traditional Kerala architecture. Finally, in the evening, enjoy a classical Indian dance performance at the Kalakshetra Cultural Academy.

  2. Day 2: Napier Museum and Zoo
15 minutes (4.3 km) from Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Start your morning by exploring the Napier Museum, a stunning 19th-century building that houses a collection of historic artifacts and artwork from India and beyond. Next, head to the nearby Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, which is home to over 80 species of animals and birds, including Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and Indian rhinoceroses. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll along Kovalam Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Thiruvananthapuram, and watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea.

Recommendations

Aside from the places mentioned, you may also want to check out the Kanakakunnu Palace, a beautiful palace surrounded by gardens that hosts cultural events, and the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, which is famous for the Attukal Pongala festival held in February or March. If you have time for a side trip, consider visiting the nearby Varkala Beach or the backwaters of Poovar Island. To maximize your fun, try some local cuisine like dosa, a savory pancake made from rice flour, and seafood dishes like fish curry and prawn roast.
