Pondicherry Relaxation Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Aurobindo Ashram
10 minutes (2.3 km) from Pondicherry Promenade Beach

In the morning, visit the Aurobindo Ashram. It is a spiritual center founded by the philosopher Aurobindo Ghose in 1926. The ashram comprises several buildings, including the Samadhi, where Aurobindo and his collaborator The Mother are entombed. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Auroville, a unique community established in 1968. Explore the Matrimandir, the center of Auroville, which consists of a large golden sphere in the middle of a circular courtyard. In the evening, relax at the Promenade Beach and enjoy the sunset.

  2. Day 2: Serenity Beach
20 minutes (4.2 km) from Aurobindo Ashram

Start your day with yoga and meditation at the beach. Serenity Beach is a quieter and less crowded option compared to the Promenade Beach. Spend the morning relaxing under an umbrella or swimming in the sea. In the afternoon, head to the Botanical Garden, which has a wide variety of plant species and a musical fountain. In the evening, check out the Pondicherry Night Market for souvenirs and local delicacies.

  3. Day 3: Chunnambar Boat House
30 minutes (8.5 km) from Serenity Beach

Start your day with breakfast at Baker Street. In the morning, head to Chunnambar Boat House, which offers boat rides through the backwaters of Pondicherry. In the afternoon, visit the Pondicherry Museum, which has a collection of rare bronze and stone sculptures from the Pallava and Chola dynasties. In the evening, head to the rooftop restaurant of the Le Dupleix hotel for dinner and enjoy the view of the city.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the French War Memorial, which is dedicated to soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. For a side trip, visit Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its rock-cut temples and sculptures. To maximize your fun, rent a bike and explore the city on your own. Don't forget to try some of the local South Indian cuisine, especially dosa and sambar.
