Welcome to Vaishno Devi! Start your day by landing at Jammu Airport, located about 35 kilometers from Katra, the base camp for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or board a pre-arranged transfer to Katra. Once you reach Katra, check-in at your hotel and take some rest before venturing out to explore the holy town.
Head to the Vaishno Devi Bhavan in the afternoon. It is the main shrine dedicated to the Hindu goddess Vaishno Devi, and it requires a trek of approximately 13 kilometers from Katra. The trek takes around 5-6 hours, depending on your pace. Along the way, you'll encounter several small shrines and beautiful natural surroundings. Once you reach the Bhavan, offer your prayers and seek blessings.
After visiting the Bhavan, you can also visit Ardhkuwari, a holy cave located halfway between Katra and the Bhavan. It is believed that the goddess Vaishno Devi meditated here for nine months. The cave is around 6 kilometers from the Bhavan and can be reached by foot or on ponies available for hire.
After descending from the Bhavan or Ardhkuwari, spend your evening exploring the vibrant Katra Bazaar. This bustling marketplace offers a variety of shops and stalls selling religious artifacts, souvenirs, and local delicacies. Enjoy a traditional dinner at one of the local restaurants, savoring authentic North Indian cuisine.
On the second day, enhance your Vaishno Devi experience with a thrilling helicopter ride. Start early and make your way to the Sanjichhat helipad, located near Katra. The helicopter ride to Sanjichhat, which is very close to the Bhavan, provides an awe-inspiring aerial view of the lush surroundings. Once you reach Sanjichhat, trek to the Bhavan again and offer your prayers.
After paying your respects at the Bhavan, you can choose to visit Adkuwari, another cave of great religious significance. It is located around 6 kilometers from the Bhavan and can be reached on foot or by ponies. Adkuwari is believed to be the place where the goddess Vaishno Devi hid from the demon Bhairon Nath before ultimately vanquishing him.
Next, visit Charan Paduka, a holy rock bearing the imprints of the goddess' feet. It is situated nearly 2.5 kilometers from Adkuwari and is accessible by a trek or on ponies. Offering prayers at Charan Paduka is considered auspicious.
In the evening, make your way to the Bhairon Temple, located at the top of Bhairon Ghati, near the Bhavan. The temple holds immense religious significance, and it is believed that the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is incomplete without visiting it. The temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, making it a serene and peaceful spot.
Afterward, you can also visit the nearby Bhairo Baba Temple. Perched on a hill, this temple enshrines Bhairo Baba, who was a demon-turned-guardian and protector of the goddess Vaishno Devi. The temple provides a picturesque view of the holy town and the Trikuta Mountains.
