Shoestring Budget 5-Day Itinerary for Dharamshala in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Tsuglagkhang Complex
    10 minutes (2.1 kilometers) from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand

    In the morning, visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, which is the home of the Dalai Lama and the largest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet. Explore the three main shrines and learn about Tibetan culture and history. In the afternoon, have lunch at Tibet Kitchen and try their momos, a traditional Tibetan dumpling. In the evening, take a walk around the Dal Lake and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

  2. Day 2: Bhagsu Waterfall
    25 minutes (3.4 kilometers) from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand

    Start the day by hiking to Bhagsu Waterfall. The trail is easy and takes around 30 minutes. Take a refreshing dip in the waterfall and enjoy the scenic views. In the afternoon, visit the Namgyal Monastery, which is one of the most important monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. In the evening, try some local street food at Jogiwara Road.

  3. Day 3: Kangra Fort
    1 hour 5 minutes (18.2 kilometers) from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand

    Visit the Kangra Fort, which is the largest fort in the Himalayas and has a rich history dating back to the ancient times. Explore the various temples, palaces, and museums inside the fort. In the afternoon, visit the Kangra Art Museum, which houses a collection of Kangra and Tibetan miniature paintings, traditional jewelry, and manuscripts. In the evening, take a walk around the Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

  4. Day 4: Norbulingka Institute
    30 minutes (8.9 kilometers) from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand

    Visit the Norbulingka Institute, which is dedicated to preserving the Tibetan culture and arts. Take a tour of the institute and visit the workshops of thangka painting, wood carving, and embroidery. In the afternoon, visit the St. John in the Wilderness Church, which is one of the oldest churches in India and has beautiful Belgian stained-glass windows. In the evening, have a cup of tea at Illiterati Books & Coffee and enjoy the view of the Dhauladhar range.

  5. Day 5: Triund Trek
    1 hour 35 minutes (7.1 kilometers) from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand

    Embark on the Triund Trek, which is one of the most popular treks in the region and offers stunning views of the Dhauladhar range. The trek is moderate and takes around 4-5 hours. Have a picnic lunch at the top and enjoy the panoramic views. In the evening, relax at the McLeod Ganj Square and try some delicious Tibetan and Indian cuisine.

You can also consider visiting the Masrur Rock Cut Temple, which is a complex of 15 rock-cut temples dating back to the 8th century. You can also take a day trip to the Bir-Billing, which is a popular destination for paragliding and is located around 70 kilometers from Dharamshala. To maximize the fun, you can also try some adventure sports like ziplining and rock climbing at the Dharamshala Adventure Park. Don't forget to carry a reusable water bottle and a hat to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
