3-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar MP in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    Approximately 20 minutes (7.9 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    In the morning, head to Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the most famous Shiva temples in the country. Visitors come to offer prayers and seek blessings of Lord Shiva. You can also witness the unique Bhasma Aarti, where the Lingam of the deity is covered with ash, and the ritual is performed with great enthusiasm. Afternoon can be spent exploring the nearby markets and trying out some local delicacies. In the evening, take a stroll along the Ram Ghat to witness the grand aarti ceremony.

  2. Day 2: Omkareshwar Temple
    Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes (77.8 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start the day with a visit to Omkareshwar Temple, located on an island in the Narmada River. This temple is unique because of its Jyotirlinga form, which represents the infinite nature of Lord Shiva. After seeking blessings at the temple, one can take a boat ride in the Narmada river and visit the various ghats surrounding the temple. In the evening, attend the aarti ceremony at the temple.

  3. Day 3: Bagh Caves
    Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes (122.3 km) from Omkareshwar Temple

    On the final day, head to the Bagh Caves, a group of nine rock-cut caves that are known for their beautiful paintings and sculptures. The caves are an example of early Buddhist architecture and art and are believed to have been constructed between 4th and 6th century AD. Spend the morning exploring the caves and admiring the intricate artwork. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic lunch in the nearby gardens. End the day by visiting the nearby Dhar Fort and enjoying the sunset view from the top.

While in Ujjain, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Kumbh Mela, held once in every 12 years. If you have more time, consider taking a day trip to Mandu, known for its rich history and architecture. Another popular side trip is to Maheshwar, a charming town situated on the banks of the Narmada River, known for its handloom sarees and Maheshwari Maheshwar Fort.
