Family Friendly 3-Day Itinerary for Golden Temple, Amritsar in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
    10 minutes (2.2 km) from Amritsar Junction railway station

    Start your day by visiting the iconic Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib. It's the most important Sikh gurdwara in the world and the holiest place for Sikhs. Spend your morning admiring the temple's stunning architecture and watching the devotees taking a dip in the Amrit Sarovar. In the afternoon, head to the Guru Ka Langar to have a delicious vegetarian meal prepared by volunteers, and then visit the Partition Museum to learn about the history of the partition of India and Pakistan. In the evening, attend the Palki Sahib ceremony where the holy book of Sikhs, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is carried to its resting place.

  2. Day 2: Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah Border
    10 minutes (1.5 km) from Golden Temple

    Start your day by paying your respects at the Jallianwala Bagh, a memorial to the victims of the 1919 Amritsar massacre. Spend your morning learning about the tragic event and the Indian independence movement. In the afternoon, head to the Wagah Border to witness the Beating Retreat ceremony that takes place every evening. It's a patriotic ceremony performed by the Indian and Pakistani armies where the flags of both countries are lowered. In the evening, head back to the Golden Temple to see it beautifully lit up.

  3. Day 3: Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum and Ram Bagh
    15 minutes (6.5 km) from Golden Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, which is dedicated to the life and times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire. Spend your morning exploring the museum's galleries and learning about the Maharaja's achievements. In the afternoon, head to the Ram Bagh, a beautiful garden that was once the summer palace of the Sikh Empire's ruling Maharaja. Take a stroll around the garden and admire the stunning architecture of the palace. In the evening, enjoy a Punjabi dinner at a local restaurant.

Recommendations

Make sure to try out some of the local street food, such as Amritsari Kulcha and Lassi. You can also take a day trip to the nearby Wagah Border to witness the lowering of the flags ceremony. Another great side trip is to the Durgiana Temple, which is a beautiful Hindu temple located just a few kilometers from the Golden Temple. Lastly, make sure to catch the Gurbani Kirtan at the Golden Temple in the early morning hours, it's an ethereal experience.
