Four Days in Chennai, September 2023

  1. Day 1: Marina Beach
    30 minutes (10.2 km) from Chennai International Airport

    Start your Chennai adventure by visiting Marina Beach, the second-longest urban beach in the world. Enjoy the sunrise and take a morning walk on the sand. In the afternoon, visit the Santhome Cathedral, a beautiful white church built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. End your day by exploring the Government Museum, where you can find exhibits on art, anthropology, and archaeology.

  2. Day 2: Kapaleeswarar Temple
    25 minutes (8.5 km) from Marina Beach

    Begin your day by visiting Kapaleeswarar Temple, a 7th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. After taking in the stunning architecture and intricate carvings, enjoy a delicious South Indian breakfast at one of the many restaurants in the area. In the afternoon, visit the Fort St. George, a colonial-era fort built by the British in 1644. End your day by taking a stroll in the beautiful Besant Nagar Beach and enjoy the sunset.

  3. Day 3: Mahabalipuram
    1 hour 30 minutes (55.3 km) from Kapaleeswarar Temple

    Take a day trip to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the Shore Temple, a stunning 8th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Explore the Five Rathas, a group of monolithic rock-cut temples, and marvel at the intricate carvings. End your day by visiting the Tiger Cave, a beautiful rock-cut Hindu temple.

  4. Day 4: DakshinaChitra
    45 minutes (21.8 km) from Mahabalipuram

    On your last day in Chennai, visit DakshinaChitra, a living museum of traditional South Indian culture and heritage. Take a guided tour and learn about the various art forms, lifestyles, and crafts of South India. In the afternoon, visit the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, one of the largest zoological parks in India, and see a wide range of animals and birds. End your day by shopping for souvenirs at the Pondy Bazaar, a bustling shopping district in Chennai.

Don't miss the chance to visit the famous Kapilashwarar Temple during one of its festivals, such as the Arupathimoovar Festival or the Panguni Peruvizha. You might also consider a side trip to the beautiful city of Puducherry, located 160 km south of Chennai.
