3-Day Nature Itinerary in North (November 2023)

  1. Day 1: Shenandoah National Park
    2 hours 45 minutes (117 miles) from Washington, D.C.

    Start your day early and head to Shenandoah National Park, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take a scenic drive on Skyline Drive, stopping at overlooks for breathtaking views of the fall foliage. In the afternoon, go for a hike on one of the park's many trails, such as the popular Dark Hollow Falls Trail. End the day stargazing in the park, where you can see thousands of stars thanks to the park's lack of light pollution.

  2. Day 2: Great Falls Park
    1 hour 10 minutes (23 miles) from Shenandoah National Park

    Start your morning at Great Falls Park, where you can see the Potomac River's cascading falls. Take a hike on one of the park's many trails, such as the Billy Goat Trail, which offers challenging terrain and stunning views. In the afternoon, go kayaking on the Potomac River, where you can take in the fall foliage from a different perspective. End the day with a picnic in the park, enjoying the peaceful sounds of the river.

  3. Day 3: Assateague Island National Seashore
    3 hours (140 miles) from Great Falls Park

    Head to Assateague Island National Seashore for a day of beachcombing and wildlife spotting. Start your day by walking along the beach and collecting seashells. In the afternoon, go for a hike on one of the park's many trails, where you can spot wild horses and other wildlife. End the day by watching the sunset on the beach, taking in the sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you have extra time, consider visiting Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, where you can learn about the town's role in the Civil War and hike on the Appalachian Trail. For a side trip, head to the Luray Caverns, where you can explore underground caves.
