3-Day Mangrove Forest Itinerary for Nature Lovers in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge
    20 minutes (15 miles) from Downtown New Orleans
    Morning: Explore the freshwater and brackish marshes of Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge on a guided pontoon boat tour. Observe the diverse ecosystem of the area and spot alligators, egrets, herons, and other birds.
    Afternoon: Go for a hike or bike ride on one of the refuge's trails. The Palmetto or Ridge Trails offer excellent views of the marshes and are relatively easy. Don't forget to bring sunscreen and bug spray.
    Evening: Head to Chef Menteur Pass and watch the sunset over Lake Pontchartrain. The area offers excellent fishing opportunities, so bring your gear if interested.
  2. Day 2: Everglades National Park
    45 minutes (38 miles) from Downtown Miami
    Morning: Take an airboat tour through the sawgrass prairies and mangrove swamps of the Everglades. Learn about the unique ecosystem of the area and spot alligators, snakes, and various bird species.
    Afternoon: Go for a hike in the Shark Valley area and climb the observation tower for panoramic views of the Everglades. The Bobcat Boardwalk Trail is an easy and scenic option for families.
    Evening: Join a ranger-led program and learn about the night creatures of the Everglades. The Anhinga or Flamingo areas are excellent spots to see fireflies, bats, and owls.
  3. Day 3: Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge
    1 hour 40 minutes (75 miles) from Downtown Naples
    Morning: Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle through the maze of mangrove islands and channels of the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Keep an eye out for dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and ospreys.
    Afternoon: Hike the Marsh Trail or the Lighthouse Trail on Cape Romano, and discover the history and ecology of the area. The lighthouse has a fascinating story and offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico.
    Evening: Relax on one of the white-sand beaches of Marco Island and watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. The beach is a nesting site for sea turtles, so please follow the guidelines to protect them.

If you have more time, consider visiting the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve near New Orleans, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary near Miami, or the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples.
