7-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Smoky Mountain National Park in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Clingmans Dome
    1 hour (38 miles) from Knoxville, TN

    Take the family on a scenic drive through the park to the highest point in the Smoky Mountains. Enjoy panoramic views from the observation tower and hike the nearby trails.

  2. Day 2: Cades Cove
    45 minutes (25 miles) from Clingmans Dome

    Experience the park's history by driving through the 11-mile loop road. See old churches, log homes and barns. Stop at the visitor center to learn about the area and take a hike on one of the many trails.

  3. Day 3: Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
    30 minutes (14 miles) from Cades Cove

    Drive the winding trail for a chance to see wildlife, waterfalls and historic buildings. Take the hike to Grotto Falls and enjoy the cool mist as you walk behind the waterfall. Stop at the Rainbow Falls trailhead for a quick hike to the falls.

  4. Day 4: Anakeesta
    25 minutes (12 miles) from Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

    Take the family to Anakeesta for a day of adventure. Ride the scenic chairlift to the top and enjoy the zip lines, tree canopy walk and mountain coaster. Have lunch at the Cliff Top Grill and take in the view.

  5. Day 5: Dollywood Theme Park
    20 minutes (8 miles) from Anakeesta

    Experience the excitement of Dollywood with the family. Ride roller coasters, see shows and enjoy the water park. Don't forget to stop at Dolly's Splash Country for a day of family fun.

  6. Day 6: Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
    1 hour 15 minutes (56 miles) from Dollywood Theme Park

    Take a scenic train ride through the mountains with the family. Choose from a variety of rides, including the Tuckasegee River Excursion and the Nantahala Gorge Excursion. Be sure to book in advance.

  7. Day 7: Gatlinburg SkyBridge
    30 minutes (12 miles) from Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

    End your trip with a walk across the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. Take in the views of the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg from the highest point in town. Visit the SkyDeck and SkyBridge Plaza for additional views.

Recommendations

Consider visiting the nearby towns of Pigeon Forge and Sevierville for additional attractions and dining options. Take a side trip to Asheville, NC to visit the Biltmore Estate and Gardens. Be sure to check the park's website for additional events and ranger-led activities during your trip.
