Banff and Canmore 5-Day Adventure Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Johnston Canyon Hike
    30 minutes (20 miles) from Canmore

    In the morning, hike the beautiful Johnston Canyon trail, weaving through the canyon and passing by waterfalls on suspended catwalks. In the afternoon, visit the Banff Upper Hot Springs to relax in the natural hot springs and enjoy the stunning mountain views. Finish the day with a scenic drive to Lake Louise to admire the stunning turquoise waters and glaciers.

  2. Day 2: Mount Norquay Via Ferrata and Bow River Float Trip
    15 minutes (5 miles) from Banff

    Start the day with an adventurous climb on the Mount Norquay Via Ferrata, a protected climbing route with stunning views of Banff. In the afternoon, take a relaxing float trip down the Bow River, where you can spot wildlife such as elk, osprey and bald eagles. End the day with a delicious dinner in the quaint town of Canmore.

  3. Day 3: Banff Gondola and Cave and Basin National Historic Site
    5 minutes (2 miles) from Downtown Banff

    Ride the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views of the Bow Valley.   4. Day 4: Canmore Caving and Hike to Grassi Lakes

    Explore the underground world of Rat's Nest Cave, crawling through tight spaces and rappelling down rock walls. In the afternoon, hike to the beautiful Grassi Lakes and enjoy a picnic lunch by the turquoise waters. End the day with a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs at the nearby Banff Upper Hot Springs.

  5. Day 5: Icefields Parkway Drive and Athabasca Glacier Hike
    90 minutes (120 miles) from Banff

    Take a scenic drive along the Icefields Parkway, stopping at stunning viewpoints along the way, such as Bow Lake and Peyto Lake. In the afternoon, hike to the Athabasca Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Canadian Rockies and a surreal sight to behold. End the day with a delicious dinner in the town of Jasper before returning to Banff.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting Moraine Lake for stunning views and hiking trails or take a scenic helicopter ride over the Rockies. A side trip to Yoho National Park is also worth it, visiting attractions such as Emerald Lake and the Natural Bridge. To maximize your fun, consider renting a mountain bike or going on a guided rock climbing tour. Don't forget to pack plenty of water, sunscreen and bug spray for your outdoor adventures.
