6-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary: Japan (Fuji Mt, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tokyo)

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Osaka
    Flight arrival at Kansai International Airport (KIX)
    Approximately 1 hour (25 miles) from downtown Osaka

    In the morning, take a train to Osaka and check in to your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring the famous Osaka Castle, which has a museum on the inside that tells the story of the castle and the history of the city. In the evening, head to the Dotonbori area for dinner and a lively atmosphere filled with neon lights and street performers.

  2. Day 2: Kyoto
    1 hour (30 miles) from downtown Osaka

    Travel to the ancient city of Kyoto, known for its beautiful temples, shrines and gardens. Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of torii gates and the Golden Pavilion, a stunning temple covered in gold leaf. Take a stroll through the traditional streets of Gion, where you might spot a Geisha, and enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

  3. Day 3: Hiroshima and Miyajima
    2 hours and 15 minutes (200 miles) from downtown Kyoto

    Take a train to Hiroshima and visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, which commemorates the victims of the atomic bomb. In the afternoon, take a ferry to Miyajima Island and see the famous floating torii gate at the Itsukushima Shrine. You can also hike Mount Misen for stunning views of the island.

  4. Day 4: Mount Fuji
    4 hours (250 miles) from downtown Hiroshima

    Travel to Mount Fuji and hike the Yoshida Trail to the summit, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. Alternatively, take a boat cruise on Lake Ashi or visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, known for its traditional thatched-roof houses.

  5. Day 5: Tokyo
    2 hours (80 miles) from Mount Fuji

    Take a train to Tokyo and spend the day exploring the city's many attractions, such as the Meiji Shrine, the Tsukiji Fish Market, and the Tokyo Tower. In the afternoon, visit the Shibuya Crossing, which is said to be the busiest intersection in the world, and then head to Shinjuku for a night out in the city that never sleeps.

  6. Day 6: Departure from Tokyo
    Flight departure at Narita International Airport (NRT)
    Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes (50 miles) from downtown Tokyo

    Spend the morning shopping in the trendy district of Harajuku or visit the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. In the afternoon, take a train to Narita International Airport for your flight home.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting Nara, the ancient capital of Japan and home to many temples and the famous Nara deer park. You can also take a day trip to Kamakura to see the Great Buddha and explore the city's many temples. To maximize your fun, consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass, which will allow you to travel on most trains and buses throughout the country. Lastly, don't forget to try the local cuisine, such as sushi, ramen, and okonomiyaki, which are all delicious and unique to Japan.
