3-Day Chennai itinerary for Shoestring Budget in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Marina Beach
    30 minutes (7.3 km) from Chennai International Airport

    Start your Chennai trip by visiting the Marina Beach, one of the longest beaches in the world. Take a morning stroll along the beach and enjoy the sunrise. You can also try the famous street food like Murukku, Sundal, and Fried fish at the food stalls. In the afternoon, visit the Government Museum, exhibiting a wide range of art, archaeological, and geological collections. In the evening, head to the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, a Hindu temple built-in 7th century AD, and witness the rituals performed by the locals.

  2. Day 2: Fort St. George
    25 minutes (6.2 km) from Marina Beach

    Start your day at Fort St. George, a British-built fortress, and visit the museum showcasing British-era paintings, weapons, and coins. In the afternoon, visit the Santhome Cathedral Basilica, a Roman Catholic Church built over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Spend your evening at the Breezy Beach, a less crowded beach with a serene ambiance. You can also try the seafood at the stalls nearby.

  3. Day 3: Mahabalipuram
    1 hour 30 minutes (55.3 km) from Fort St. George

    On the third day, take a day trip to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the famous Shore Temple, a structural temple built-in 8th century AD, and Pancha Rathas, a complex of five monolithic pyramidal structures. In the afternoon, visit the Mahabalipuram Beach and relax by the shore. You can also try some adventure sports like surfing, parasailing, and windsurfing. In the evening, head back to Chennai and visit the Valluvar Kottam, a memorial dedicated to the classical Tamil poet, Valluvar.
