Jaisalmer: Exploring The Golden City In 3 Days

  1. Day 1: Jaisalmer Fort
5 minutes (0.3 miles) from Jaisalmer Railway Station
    Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

In the morning, explore the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort, which is also known as Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. Built-in 1156 AD, this fort is one of the largest forts in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can spend hours exploring the narrow lanes, vibrant markets, temples, and havelis (mansions) inside the fort. Afternoon can be spent visiting some of the oldest havelis like Patwon ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli. In the evening, enjoy a sunset view of the fort from the nearby Gadisar Lake.

  2. Day 2: Sam Sand Dunes
41.5 km (1 hour 15 minutes) from Jaisalmer Fort
    Time: 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Start your day with a visit to the Bada Bagh, a garden complex that houses the royal cenotaphs of the erstwhile rulers of Jaisalmer. After lunch, head towards the Sam Sand Dunes, located on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, for a unique experience of a desert safari. You can take a camel ride, go dune bashing, or simply enjoy the music and dance performances under the starry sky. Make sure to catch the sunset at the dunes and relish some authentic Rajasthani cuisine for dinner.

  3. Day 3: Kuldhara and Jain Temples
20 km (30 minutes) from Sam Sand Dunes
    Time: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

On the last day, visit Kuldhara, an abandoned village that is surrounded by myths and folklore. It is believed that the village was cursed by the Paliwal Brahmins, who lived there, for over 300 years. After that, visit the Jain temples, which are located inside the Jaisalmer Fort. These temples are known for their intricate carvings and architecture. Spend the evening strolling around the markets in the fort and buying some souvenirs.

Recommendations

If you have time, you can visit the Vyas Chhatri, which is a cenotaph of the sage Vyas. It offers an excellent view of the Jaisalmer Fort. You can also take a side trip to the Tanot Mata Temple, located near the India-Pakistan border. For adventure enthusiasts, the Quad biking activity offered at the Sam Sand Dunes is a must-try. To make the most of your trip, start your day early, carry lots of water, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
