6-Day Adventure Itinerary for Meghalaya in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Shillong
    30 minutes (10.2 km) from Shillong Airport

    Start your adventure in the beautiful hill station of Shillong. Visit the Laitlum Canyons in the morning for some breathtaking views of the valley. In the afternoon, head to the Elephant Falls for a refreshing dip in the pool. In the evening, explore the local markets for some souvenirs.

  2. Day 2: Cherrapunjee
    2 hours (54 km) from Shillong

    Drive down to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth. Start the day with a trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, visit the Nohkalikai Waterfalls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. In the evening, take a stroll around the village and interact with the friendly locals.

  3. Day 3: Dawki
    2 hours 30 minutes (80 km) from Cherrapunjee

    Drive to Dawki, a small town on the border of India and Bangladesh. Start the day with a boat ride on the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. In the afternoon, visit the Mawlynnong Village, known as the cleanest village in Asia. In the evening, relax in one of the eco-cottages and enjoy the serenity of nature.

  4. Day 4: Mawphlang
    2 hours (54.8 km) from Dawki

    Head to Mawphlang, a village known for its sacred groves and traditional Khasi culture. Start the day with a trek through the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, home to rare species of plants and animals. In the afternoon, visit the Khasi Heritage Village to learn more about the local culture. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Khasi dinner with the locals.

  5. Day 5: Nongriat
    2 hours 30 minutes (75 km) from Mawphlang

    Drive to Nongriat, a small village nestled in the heart of the jungle. Start the day with a challenging trek down to the Living Root Bridges of Nongriat, a stunning example of bioengineering. In the afternoon, take a dip in the natural swimming pool at the base of the waterfall. In the evening, stay overnight in one of the homestays and enjoy the tranquillity of the jungle.

  6. Day 6: Guwahati
    4 hours 30 minutes (140 km) from Nongriat

    End your adventure in the city of Guwahati, known for its ancient temples and bustling markets. Start the day with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India. In the afternoon, explore the local markets for some last-minute shopping. In the evening, enjoy a river cruise on the Brahmaputra River and watch the sunset over the city.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, consider visiting the Balpakram National Park for some wildlife viewing. You can also take a side trip to the nearby state of Assam and visit the Kaziranga National Park, home to the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. To maximize your fun, try some of the local Khasi delicacies such as Jadoh, Dohkhlieh, and Tungrymbai. Finally, make sure to carry comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, and rain gear as the weather can be unpredictable in Meghalaya.
