Exploring Kerala with Family in June 2023

If you are looking for a fun-filled destination to visit with your family, Kerala is the perfect place to go! This itinerary covers the best of Kerala while keeping in mind your family's needs and preferences.

  1. Day 1: Kochi
25 minutes (22.6 km) from Cochin International Airport

Start your day by visiting the Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace. This palace was built by the Portuguese and gifted to the Raja of Kochi in the 16th century. After exploring the palace, head to the Spice Market to experience the aroma and flavors of Kerala's spices. For lunch, we recommend trying the traditional Kerala meal at Fort House Restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Hill Palace Museum, the largest archaeological museum in Kerala, which has a collection of artifacts from the royal family of Kochi. Finally, end your day by watching a Kathakali performance at a local theater.

  2. Day 2: Munnar
4 hours (130 km) from Kochi

Start your day early and drive to Munnar, a hill station known for its tea plantations and natural beauty. Stop by the Cheeyappara Waterfalls on the way. Upon arrival, visit the Tea Museum to learn about the history and production of tea in Munnar. For lunch, we recommend the Rapsy Restaurant, which serves a variety of Indian and Chinese dishes. In the afternoon, visit the Mattupetty Dam and take a boat ride on the Mattupetty Lake. Finally, take a leisurely stroll in the Eravikulam National Park, where you can spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.

  3. Day 3: Alleppey
4 hours (150 km) from Munnar

Start your day by cruising through the backwaters of Alleppey on a houseboat. Enjoy the scenic beauty and experience the local life along the waterways. For lunch, the houseboat crew will prepare traditional Kerala cuisine for you. In the afternoon, visit the Marari Beach, a quiet and pristine beach that is perfect for a relaxing swim. Finally, end your day by watching the sunset at the Alappuzha Lighthouse.

Recommendations

Some other local attractions and experiences you may consider are:

  • Visit the Athirappilly Waterfalls, also known as the Niagara of India, near Kochi.
  • Explore the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady, where you can spot elephants, tigers, and other animals.
  • Take a side trip to the beautiful beaches of Kovalam.

To maximize your fun, we recommend booking a local guide who can provide you with more information on Kerala's culture and history. Also, make sure to try some local delicacies such as appam, puttu, and fish curry.

Lastly, don't forget to pack comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent, as the weather in Kerala can be humid and tropical.
