Two-Day Itinerary for Mumbai

  1. Day 1: Gateway of India
10 minutes (2.5 km) from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Begin your day at the iconic Gateway of India, built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. Take a boat ride to Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures dating back to the 6th century. After returning, explore the nearby Colaba Causeway, a popular street market offering everything from clothing to jewelry to souvenirs. In the evening, head to Marine Drive, also known as the Queen's Necklace, to watch the sunset over the Arabian Sea.

  2. Day 2: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum)
15 minutes (3.5 km) from Gateway of India

Start your day at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, a museum showcasing art, artifacts, and natural history exhibits from India and around the world. Afterward, head to Haji Ali Dargah, a mosque and tomb located on a small island off the coast of Mumbai. Take a walk along Bandstand Promenade in the afternoon, a popular spot for joggers and a great place to see the famous Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge. End your day with a visit to the iconic Shree Siddhivinayak Temple, one of the most popular Hindu temples in Mumbai.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Sanjay Gandhi National Park to see the Kanheri Caves, a complex of Buddhist rock-cut monuments and caves. You can also take a ferry to the nearby Elephanta Island to explore more ancient temples. For a side trip, visit the hill station of Lonavala to see scenic waterfalls and enjoy the outdoors. To maximize your fun, try the local street food, such as vada pav, pani puri, and bhel puri. Finally, don't forget to shop for some souvenirs at the local markets like Crawford Market and Zaveri Bazaar.
