2-Day Adventure Itinerary for Thanjavur in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Brihadeeswarar Temple
    10 minutes (4.2 km) from Thanjavur Railway Station

    In the morning, visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest temples in India. Explore the intricate carvings and the towering 66-metre vimana. In the afternoon, head to the Thanjavur Royal Palace and Museum. The palace was built in the 16th century and has a huge collection of artefacts and exhibits showcasing the history and culture of Thanjavur. In the evening, head to the Schwartz Church, built in 1779 by the Danish missionary, Frederic Schwartz. The church boasts of beautiful stained glass windows and is a serene spot for some quiet time.

  2. Day 2: Grand Anicut and Kumbakonam
    1 hour 20 minutes (47.9 km) from Thanjavur

    In the morning, head to the Grand Anicut, an ancient dam built across the Kaveri River. Enjoy the scenic views and take a boat ride on the river. In the afternoon, drive to Kumbakonam, a temple town located on the banks of the Kaveri River. Visit the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, the Nageshwara Temple, and the Sarangapani Temple. In the evening, head to the Mahamaham Tank, a sacred tank that is believed to be connected to all the holy rivers of India. Take a dip in the tank for a purifying experience.

If you're interested in exploring more temples, the Airavateswara Temple in Darasuram and the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple are worth visiting. For some adventure, head to the Thanjavur Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 35 km from Thanjavur. You can go on a wildlife safari and spot animals like blackbuck, spotted deer, and peacocks. If you have time, consider taking a day trip to the nearby town of Kumbakonam and exploring the numerous temples there.
