5-day Adventure Itinerary in Meghalaya in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Shillong
    30 minutes (10.2 miles) from Shillong Airport

    Start your adventure by exploring the Elephant Falls, a picturesque waterfall located just outside of Shillong. In the afternoon, visit the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, which boasts a vast collection of artifacts showcasing the rich culture of the Northeast. For the evening, head to Police Bazaar and enjoy some local street food.

  2. Day 2: Mawlynnong Village
    2 hours (54 miles) from Shillong

    Start early and travel to Mawlynnong Village, known as the cleanest village in Asia. Take a leisurely walk along the Living Root Bridges amidst lush green forests. Have lunch in the village, which offers authentic Khasi cuisine. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Balancing Rock and explore the village at your own pace. Return to Shillong in the evening.

  3. Day 3: Dawki
    2 hours 30 minutes (56 miles) from Shillong

    Head to Dawki for a thrilling experience of boating on the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. The river also offers opportunities for kayaking, zip lining and snorkeling. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Bangladesh border and explore the Dawki market. Return to Shillong in the evening.

  4. Day 4: Cherrapunji
    2 hours (34 miles) from Shillong

    Drive to Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth and explore the Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Caves and the Seven Sisters Falls. Have lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. In the afternoon, visit the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a unique natural wonder. Return to Shillong in the evening.

  5. Day 5: Jowai
    2 hours 30 minutes (59 miles) from Shillong

    Make your way to Jowai, a picturesque town famous for its scenic beauty. Visit the Thadlaskein Lake, a hidden jewel that offers scenic views of surrounding hills and valleys. Have lunch at a local restaurant and head to the Tyrshi Falls for an exciting trek. In the evening, visit the nearby Nartiang Monoliths, which are ancient megaliths that date back to the 15th century. Return to Shillong in the evening.

Recommendations

For adventure enthusiasts, taking a trek to the Living Root Bridges in Nongriat village is a must. It takes about 4-5 hours to reach the village, but the trek is well worth it. You can also visit the Umiam Lake, which is a popular spot for water sports such as kayaking, boating, and water skiing. If you have more time, you can take a trip to the nearby state of Assam and visit the Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its one-horned rhinoceroses.
