Two-Day Itinerary for Dharamshala in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Namgyal Monastery
    20 minutes (6.5 km) from Dharamshala

    Morning: Start your day at Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. The monastery is an oasis of peace and tranquility. You can take a guided tour and learn about the history of the monastery and the Tibetan culture.

    Afternoon: Visit McLeod Ganj, also known as "Little Lhasa." This bustling town is home to many Tibetans and exiles. Walk around the town, visit the shops and cafes, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

    Evening: Head to the Bhagsu Nag waterfall, located near McLeod Ganj. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and is a great spot to relax and unwind.

  2. Day 2: Kangra Fort
    1 hour (22 km) from Dharamshala

    Morning: Start your day at the Kangra Fort, one of the oldest forts in India. The fort has a rich history and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

    Afternoon: Visit the Masroor Rock Cut Temple, an ancient temple carved out of a single rock. The temple is a great example of Indian rock-cut architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Evening: End your day at the Norbulingka Institute, a center for Tibetan art and culture. Take a tour of the institute and learn about traditional Tibetan arts and crafts such as Thangka painting and wood carving.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider taking a side trip to the Palampur Tea Gardens, located about an hour's drive from Dharamshala. The tea gardens offer breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar range and are a great place to relax and enjoy a cup of tea.

For adventure seekers, there are many trekking trails in and around Dharamshala. You can choose from easy day hikes to challenging multi-day treks.

When in Dharamshala, don't forget to try some local Tibetan cuisine. Some popular dishes include momos, thukpa, and shabhaley. You can find these dishes in most restaurants in McLeod Ganj.
