  1. Day 1: Hagia Sophia
16 minutes (2.5 km) from Sultanahmet Square

In the morning, visit the iconic Hagia Sophia, a former church turned mosque turned museum. Marvel at its impressive dome and beautiful mosaics. In the afternoon, visit the Topkapi Palace, a grand Ottoman palace that was home to generations of sultans. Explore its opulent rooms and gardens, and don't miss the Harem section. In the evening, take a stroll around the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. Get lost in its labyrinthine alleys and shop for souvenirs, spices, and Turkish delights.

  2. Day 2: Blue Mosque
10 minutes (1.5 km) from Hagia Sophia

Start your day at the Blue Mosque, a stunning mosque with six minarets and a cascading domed ceiling. Admire its intricate tilework and calligraphy, and learn about its history. Next, head to the Basilica Cistern, an underground water reservoir built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Walk along its dimly lit walkways and marvel at the Medusa head sculptures. In the afternoon, visit the Spice Bazaar, a colorful market filled with exotic spices, teas, and sweets. Sample some Turkish delight and buy some saffron for your kitchen. In the evening, take a Bosphorus cruise and enjoy the sunset over the Istanbul skyline.

  3. Day 3: Ortaköy
25 minutes (7 km) from Blue Mosque

For a change of pace, head to the charming neighborhood of Ortaköy. Start your morning at the Ortaköy Mosque, a small but beautiful mosque on the Bosphorus waterfront. Have a Turkish breakfast at one of the many cafes along the shore, and try some simit (Turkish bagel) and menemen (Turkish scrambled eggs). Walk around the narrow streets and browse the local handicrafts. In the afternoon, visit the Istanbul Modern Art Museum, a contemporary art museum housed in a former warehouse. See works by Turkey's most famous artists and enjoy a cup of tea at its waterfront cafe. In the evening, have a seafood dinner at one of the many fish restaurants along the Bosphorus.

Recommendations

Other attractions worth visiting include the Dolmabahçe Palace, the Chora Church, and the Galata Tower. If you have extra time, take a day trip to the Princes' Islands or the seaside town of Şile. To maximize your fun, try some Turkish street food like döner kebab, lahmacun, and kokoreç. Take a Turkish bath (hammam) and indulge in a massage or scrub. Attend a Whirling Dervishes ceremony to experience Sufi spirituality. And don't forget to bargain at the markets and shops to get the best deals!
