Arupadai Veedu by Train: All Six Murugan Abodes in 7 Days from Chennai

Start early from Chennai Central. Suburban EMU locals to Tiruttani (station TRT) run through the day and take about 2h15-2h40. Express trains towards Tirupati are faster, about 1h15-1h25; the morning Sapthagiri Express is one option. Check current times on erail or the IRCTC/NTES apps before you go.

The Subramaniya Swamy temple sits on Thanigai hill above the town. You can climb the 365 steps (one for each day of the year) or go up the hill road by bus or auto. Published timings are roughly 5:45 AM to 8:45-9 PM. Confirm them with the temple or the HR&CE site, because festival days change the schedule.

Head back to Chennai by EMU (about 2h20) or by an evening express, and sleep in Chennai. Egmore is the best area for tomorrow's departure. Thiruthani has guesthouses if you prefer an early-morning darshan.

Take a daytime train from Chennai Egmore to Kumbakonam (station KMU). The daily Chozhan Superfast leaves in the morning and takes about 5h20. If you prefer, the overnight Uzhavan Express arrives in the early hours. Check timings on erail.

Stay in Kumbakonam, the practical base. Swamimalai is about 6 km west by town bus, auto or taxi. The Swaminatha Swamy temple stands on a small built-up hillock reached by 60 steps, one named for each Tamil year. Most listings say it opens around 5-6 AM, closes around 12-1 PM and reopens around 4 PM until 9-10 PM, so go in the evening, not mid-afternoon.

If you arrive with time to spare, Kumbakonam's own temples and the Darasuram Airavatesvara temple nearby fill a slow afternoon before Swamimalai reopens.

There is no direct train from Kumbakonam to Palani. Ride to Dindigul Junction (about 3h, e.g. the daily midday Mayiladuthurai-Sengottai Express), then change for Palani (about 1h, e.g. the evening Tiruchendur-Palakkad Express). Plan on 6-7 hours door to door, including the wait at Dindigul. Check both legs on erail because timings change.

Use the morning for a second Swamimalai darshan before you leave. Road travel is the backup: buses and taxis link Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Trichy and Dindigul with Palani.

Sleep near the hill foot in Palani (the Adivaram and Giri Veedhi area), so that tomorrow's climb can start at dawn.

Go up Palani hill early. You can climb the stairway or the gentler elephant path, or ride one of the winch (funicular) tracks or the rope car. Tamil Nadu Tourism lists temple hours of about 6 AM-8 PM, and earlier on festival days. The rope car closes for annual maintenance (it has been shut in July-September in past years) and the winch also has fixed hours, so check on arrival.

Take an afternoon train from Palani to Madurai Junction, about 2h15-2h50 (e.g. the daily Coimbatore-Madurai Express in the late afternoon). Madurai is your base for the next two abodes.

Expect very large crowds at Palani during Thaipusam (January-February) and Panguni Uthiram (March-April). Avoid those dates unless the festival is your reason for going.

Morning: Pazhamudircholai (Solaimalai) is on the forested hill above Alagar Kovil, about 20-25 km north-east of Madurai. No train goes here. Take a taxi, or a bus from Madurai to Alagar Kovil, and then the hill road up to the temple. Most listings give hours of about 5:30-6 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 8-9 PM, so be back down by lunch. The Kallazhagar (Alagar Kovil) temple at the foot of the hill is worth a stop.

Late afternoon: Thiruparankundram, the rock-cut temple at the foot of a granite hill, is about 7 km south-west of central Madurai. It is easiest by city bus, auto or taxi. A few trains also stop at Tiruparankundram station (TDN), about 10 minutes from Madurai Junction. Most listings say it reopens around 4 PM after a midday break and closes around 9 PM.

If you have energy left, the Meenakshi Amman temple in the old city is close by for an evening visit.

Take the daily Palakkad-Tiruchendur Express from Madurai Junction. It leaves late morning and takes about 4h30 to Tiruchendur (TCN), the end of the line beyond Tirunelveli. The overnight Chennai-Tiruchendur Superfast also passes Madurai at about 2 AM if you would rather arrive at dawn. See erail.

The Subramaniya Swamy temple stands right on the seashore at the east end of town. The temple's press release (DT Next, August 2026) says the general darshan queue closes to new entrants at 7 PM, the paid queue at 6:30 PM, and the doors at 9 PM, with changes on festival days. Join the evening queue in good time.

Kanda Sashti (about 10-15 November 2026, Soorasamharam on 15 November) brings enormous crowds. Book rooms far ahead or pick other dates.

Published timings say the temple opens at about 5 AM on regular days, and early morning is usually calmer than evening. Many pilgrims bathe in the sea before darshan, so mind the waves. Men are commonly asked to remove their shirts before entering, so dress simply.

Spend the day slowly, then board the daily Tiruchendur-Chennai Egmore Superfast in the evening. It takes about 13h40 and reaches Egmore mid-morning on day 8. Book sleeper berths early on IRCTC; it is the only daily direct Tiruchendur-Chennai train on erail.
