Adventure Itinerary: Exploring the Live Roots, Waterfalls, and Clear Blue Waters of Meghalaya in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Living Root Bridges in Nongriat Village
    3 hours 20 minutes (69 km) from Shillong

    Start early and drive to Tyrna village from where you'll hike down to Nongriat village, a small village famous for its living root bridges. The hike will take you through lush forests, crossing several small streams and waterfalls. Upon reaching Nongriat, you'll be able to take in the beauty of the Double Decker and Rainbow Falls. Spend the evening exploring the village and dine at one of the local restaurants.

  2. Day 2: Dawki and Umngot River
    2 hours 10 minutes (80 km) from Nongriat Village

    Drive to Dawki, a small town on the border of India and Bangladesh. Take a boat ride on the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, which is known for its mesmerizing shades of blue and green. After the boat ride, explore the nearby Mawlynnong Village, which is known for being one of the cleanest villages in Asia. Return to Dawki for an evening of stargazing and camping by the river.

  3. Day 3: Mawphlang Sacred Grove
    2 hours 10 minutes (80 km) from Dawki

    Take a scenic drive to Mawphlang Sacred Grove, which is a dense forest that is considered sacred by the locals. Take a guided tour through the forest, learning about the different types of flora and fauna that can be found here. After the tour, drive to the nearby Laitlum Canyon for breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

  4. Day 4: Nohkalikai Falls and Mawsmai Cave

    Start your day with a visit to Nohkalikai Falls, which is one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India. After taking in the views, drive to Mawsmai Cave, which is a limestone cave that is illuminated by colorful lights. Take a guided tour of the cave and marvel at the unique rock formations. End the day with a visit to Seven Sisters Falls, a group of seven different waterfalls that are surrounded by lush forests.

  5. Day 5: Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls
    1 hour (10 km) from Nohkalikai Falls

    Start your day with a visit to Shillong Peak, which is the highest point in Shillong and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding hills. After taking in the views, drive to Elephant Falls, which is a three-tiered waterfall that is named after a nearby rock that resembles an elephant.

If you're interested in adventure sports, you can go for a trek in the David Scott Trail or go kayaking in the Umngot River. You can also visit the village of Mawlynnong to learn about sustainable living and eco-tourism. Lastly, don't forget to try the local cuisine, which includes dishes like Jadoh, Tungrymbai, and Dohneiiong.
