Start your adventure at the Sinhagad Fort, located on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar Range in the Sahyadri Mountains. Head to Kamshet, a small hill station located on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Visit the Raigad Fort, which was the capital of the Maratha Empire under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is located atop a hill, and can be reached by a 1,700-step climb or a ropeway ride. Spend the morning exploring the fort and learning about its rich history and architecture. After lunch, visit the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, which is home to over 150 species of birds, and offers a peaceful escape from the city. In the evening, visit the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Center, which is spread over 165 acres and houses over 160 species of animals, birds and reptiles.
If you have time, consider visiting the Mulshi Dam, which is a scenic spot for picnics and boating. You can also take a day trip to Lonavala, which is a popular hill station located 1 hour 45 minutes (42 miles) from Pune.
