In the morning, visit the Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and hike along its scenic trails. In the afternoon, head to the Mattupetty Dam to enjoy a speedboat ride or go on a trek along the Shola Forest. In the evening, visit the Tea Museum to learn about the history of tea plantations in the area and sample some of the finest teas in Munnar.
Spend the morning exploring the Periyar National Park, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, where you can go on a jungle trek, bamboo rafting or take a boat ride on the Periyar lake. In the afternoon, head to the Mangala Devi Temple, which is nestled in the dense forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kathakali performance, a classical dance form of Kerala, at the Mudra Cultural Centre.
In the morning, visit the breathtaking Meenmutty Falls, which is a 2km trek from the parking area, and take a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear waters. In the afternoon, head to the Edakkal Caves, where you can see ancient rock art and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. In the evening, go on a wildlife safari in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can spot elephants, tigers and leopards.
Spend the morning relaxing on the beautiful Kovalam Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Kerala and enjoy some water sports such as surfing, parasailing, or jet skiing. In the afternoon, visit the Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple, a 8th century Pallava-era rock-cut temple, and the Kovalam Art Gallery, which features works by local artists. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ayurvedic massage at one of the many spas in the city.
If you have more time, consider visiting the backwaters of Alleppey, where you can take a houseboat ride and enjoy the scenic beauty of the lush green coconut trees, paddy fields and the daily life of the locals. You can also visit the Athirapally Falls, which is about 2 hours from Cochin International Airport, and is a great place for trekking, bird watching and photography.
For maximizing your fun, try the local food such as Kappa and Meen Curry, Puttu and Kadala Curry, and Appam and Stew. Consider also taking part in local festivals such as Onam, which is celebrated in August and September, or the Thrissur Pooram, which is a grand festival of Kerala that features a parade of decorated elephants and fireworks.
Lastly, be sure to pack light and comfortable clothing as the weather in Kerala in August can be hot and humid with occasional rainfall. Don’t forget to carry sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
