The underground cities of Derinkuyu or Kaymakli are engineering marvels made entirely by hand. You will find narrow, sloping passageways that lead down many floors, low-ceilinged rooms where people used to live, worship, and work, and ventilation shafts. Don't be surprised to find some dead ends, either.
The Fairy Chimneys are unique, cone-shaped rock formations that are a result of volcanic eruptions, erosion, and weathering. You can see them most clearly at Pasabag, Devrent, and Goreme Open-Air Museum. Some have been converted into hotels, restaurants, or shops, and others are still home to locals.
Red Valley is one of the most picturesque valleys in Cappadocia, with its red, orange, and pink-colored rocks, and its different formations. It is especially beautiful at sunset, but it can also be visited in the morning, mid-day, or afternoon. You can hike it on your own, or go with a guide.
To fully enjoy this itinerary, you will need to rent a car, hire a taxi, or join a tour, as public transportation in Cappadocia is limited and not well-connected. The costs will depend on your bargaining skills, itinerary, and season, but they can range from 200 TL to 800 TL. Plan ahead, compare prices and book early.
If you have more time, you can visit other valleys like Rose Valley, Love Valley, or Zemi Valley, or do a hot-air balloon ride over Cappadocia (1 hour, 150-500 USD). If you have less time, you can skip the underground cities or the sunset hike. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry water and snacks, and respect the local culture and environment.
Kayseri Erkilet International Airport (ASR) is the nearest airport to Cappadocia and is located 73 km from the city center. The other airport is Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) which is located 30 km from the city center. Both airports offer shuttle services, taxis, and car rentals.
