4-Day Foodie Itinerary for Bhutan in November 2023

  1. Day 1: Thimphu
    40 minutes (23.5 km) from Paro International Airport

    In the morning, visit the Centenary Farmers’ Market that offers organic vegetables, fruits, and grains. Walk around the market and taste their locally grown produce. After lunch, visit the Royal Textile Academy where you can see how they weave textiles and learn about their cultural significance. In the evening, head to Folk Heritage Museum to learn about Bhutanese heritage. Try traditional dishes such as ema datshi and momos, both are spicy and delicious.

  2. Day 2: Punakha
    2 hours 30 minutes (85 km) from Thimphu

    In the morning, visit Dochula Pass to see the 108 chortens and enjoy the scenic view of the Himalayas. Afterward, visit the Punakha Dzong, the second oldest and second-largest dzong in Bhutan. In the afternoon, visit the Chimi Lhakhang Temple where you can see phalluses painted on the walls and raft down the Mo Chhu River. In the evening, try some traditional Bhutanese food such as jasha maroo (spicy minced chicken) and suja (butter tea).

  3. Day 3: Paro
    3 hours (125 km) from Punakha

    In the morning, visit the famous Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery, the most iconic place in Bhutan. It's a two-hour trek to the monastery, but the breathtaking view is worth it. After lunch, visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong, a fortress and a monastery built in the 15th century. In the evening, take a stroll around Paro town and try some delicious Bhutanese street food such as phaksha paa (pork with spicy red chilies) and hoentay (dumplings).

  4. Day 4: Haa Valley
    2 hours (65 km) from Paro

    In the morning, visit the Haa Valley, the least visited and one of the most pristine regions in Bhutan. Visit the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo temples and take a stroll around the valley to enjoy the beautiful landscape. After lunch, visit the Haa Summer Festival where you can see traditional Bhutanese dances and music. In the evening, try some local Bhutanese beer such as Red Panda and Druk 11000.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting Gangtey Valley for its beautiful nature, Gangtey Monastery, and the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre. You can also try archery, Bhutan's national sport, or attend a traditional festival. To maximize your fun, try to attend a homestay program where you can learn about Bhutanese culture and try their traditional food. Lastly, don't forget to try Bhutanese snacks such as khapsey, shakam eezay, and roasted maize.
