3-Day Itinerary for Volunteering in Mumbai, June 2023

  1. Day 1: Spend a day with the kids at Magic Bus Centre
    25 minutes (7.5 miles) from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

    Start your morning by visiting the Magic Bus Centre, an NGO that helps underprivileged children by providing them with education and life skills. You can assist in teaching the kids, playing with them or helping with administrative work. For lunch, you can head to the nearby Cafe Mondegar for some delicious Indian and continental food. Spend your afternoon exploring the Gateway of India, a beautiful monument built during the British Raj. In the evening, visit the Colaba Causeway market for some street shopping and local snacks.

  2. Day 2: Volunteer at the Happy Home and School for the Blind
    30 minutes (8.7 miles) from Magic Bus Centre

    Start your day by visiting the Happy Home and School for the Blind, a non-profit that provides education and vocational training for visually-impaired students. You can help with teaching, organising activities or even assist in the kitchen. For lunch, head to the Leopold Cafe, a popular eatery that has been serving amazing food since 1871. After lunch, visit the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a beautiful wildlife reserve in the heart of Mumbai. In the evening, catch a movie at the Regal Cinema, another iconic landmark that has been entertaining locals since 1933.

  3. Day 3: Spend the day with the elderly at Dignity Foundation
    40 minutes (14.5 miles) from Happy Home and School for the Blind

    Start your morning by visiting the Dignity Foundation, a non-profit that provides support and care for the elderly. You can help with teaching, organizing activities or simply spend time with them. For lunch, head to the famous Britannia & Co. Restaurant for some Parsi cuisine. Spend your afternoon exploring the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on an island off the coast of Mumbai. In the evening, visit the Marine Drive and enjoy the beautiful sunset and cool breeze.

If you have more time, you can also visit the Haji Ali Dargah, a beautiful mosque located in the middle of the Arabian Sea. You can also take a day trip to the nearby hill station of Lonavala, which is known for its scenic beauty and waterfalls. To maximize your fun, try some of the local street food like vada pav, pav bhaji and bhel puri. Don't forget to bargain while shopping at the local markets. Lastly, ensure that you carry a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as June can be quite hot and humid in Mumbai.
