Ujjain: A 3-Day Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (1.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    In the morning, visit the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have the power to fulfill wishes. Afternoon, head to Kaliadeh Palace, located on the banks of the Shipra River. The palace was built by the Scindias and offers a stunning view of the river. In the evening, explore Ram Ghat, a popular spot for taking a dip in the holy Shipra River and enjoying the beautiful sunset.

  2. Day 2: Chintaman Ganesh Temple and Sandipani Ashram
    20 minutes (6.2 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Begin your day with a visit to the Chintaman Ganesh Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple is located at the confluence of the Shipra and Kshipra rivers and is believed to be where Lord Ganesha got rid of his curse. Afternoon, visit Sandipani Ashram, where Lord Krishna and Sudama studied under Guru Sandipani. The ashram complex has a museum displaying ancient artifacts and hosts a light and sound show in the evening. In the evening, enjoy some street food at the famous Sarafa Bazaar, which is known for its variety of food options.

  3. Day 3: Kal Bhairav Temple and Observatory
    15 minutes (3.5 km) from Chintaman Ganesh Temple

    On your last day, visit Kal Bhairav Temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Bhairava, who is believed to be the guardian deity of the city. The temple is located in the heart of the city and is known for its unique architecture. Afternoon, head to the observatory, located near the Bhartrihari Caves. The observatory was built by Raja Jai Singh II and is one of the five observatories built by him. In the evening, take a stroll through the Kothi Palace, which was built in the 19th century and is now a museum displaying artifacts from the Holkar dynasty.

You can also take a side trip to the nearby Omkareshwar Temple, which is another Jyotirlinga and is located about 80 km from Ujjain. To maximize your fun, try attending the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which is a Hindu festival that takes place every 12 years in Ujjain. Don't forget to sample the local delicacies such as poha, jalebi, and bhutte ka kees.
