Transportation in Iceland can be expensive, and most visitors choose to rent a car to explore the country's rugged and remote landscapes. A compact car can cost 6,000-12,000 ISK ($50-$100 USD) per day, depending on the season and availability. Gas is also expensive, with prices ranging from 200-250 ISK per liter ($7-$9 USD per gallon). Some tour companies offer day tours to popular destinations, but these can be costly, with prices starting at 10,000 ISK ($80 USD) per person. Public transportation is limited outside of Reykjavik, so a car is the best way to see Iceland.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, consider adding a visit to the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, or the Highlands. If you have less time, consider skipping some of the more remote destinations or shortening your stay in Reykjavik. Remember to pack warm and waterproof clothing, as Iceland's weather can be unpredictable. Stick to paved roads and designated trails, and check road conditions and weather forecasts before setting out on any adventures.

Airports

Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is Iceland's main airport, located about 50 km southwest of Reykjavik. The airport serves as a hub for international flights to and from North America and Europe. Domestic flights also depart from KEF to other parts of Iceland, including Akureyri and Egilsstaðir. Taxis and rental cars are available outside the airport, and public transportation is also available via the Flybus service.
