4-Day Nature Itinerary for Hemkund Sahib in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Rishikesh to Joshimath
    9 hours (250 km) from Rishikesh

    In the morning, depart from Rishikesh to Joshimath. Along the way, take a break at Devprayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. You can also visit the ancient Raghunath Temple in Devprayag. Proceed to Joshimath and visit the Kalpavriksha tree, believed to be 1200 years old, and the Narsingh Temple. Spend the evening exploring the local markets of Joshimath.

  2. Day 2: Joshimath to Govindghat to Ghangaria
    2 hours (22 km) from Joshimath to Govindghat, then 4-5 hours trek (14 km) to Ghangaria

    After breakfast, drive to Govindghat and start the trek to Ghangaria. Explore the picturesque village of Ghangaria, surrounded by towering mountains and verdant forests. In the afternoon, visit the Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its alpine flora and fauna. Return to Ghangaria for dinner and overnight stay.

  3. Day 3: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib
    6-7 hours trek (6 km) from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib

    Today is the day to visit the famous Hemkund Sahib, one of the most revered Sikh shrines in the world. The trek to Hemkund Sahib is steep, but the breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes make it all worth it. Spend some time at the gurudwara, take a dip in the holy lake, and enjoy the serene surroundings. In the evening, trek back to Ghangaria for dinner and overnight stay.

  4. Day 4: Ghangaria to Govindghat to Rishikesh
    4-5 hours trek (14 km) from Ghangaria to Govindghat, then 9 hours (250 km) from Govindghat to Rishikesh

    After breakfast, start the 14 km trek back to Govindghat and drive back to Rishikesh. Along the way, stop at the picturesque village of Chamoli and visit the ancient Gopinath Temple. You can also take a break at Rudraprayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, and visit the Rudranath Temple. In the evening, enjoy the sunset at Triveni Ghat and attend the Ganga Aarti ceremony.

Recommendations

If you have some extra time, you can explore the scenic town of Auli, about 16 km from Joshimath. Auli is famous for its skiing slopes and offers spectacular views of the Himalayas. You can also visit Badrinath, one of the four sacred shrines in Hinduism, located about 25 km from Joshimath. Another option is to go for a jeep safari to the Nanda Devi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its diverse flora and fauna.

Make sure to carry sufficient warm clothing, rain gear, and trekking shoes. Also, keep yourself hydrated throughout the trek. Hiring a local guide is recommended for a hassle-free experience.
