4-Day Itinerary for Assam in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati
    20 minutes (9.5 km) from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

    Visit the Kamakhya Temple in the morning, the most famous temple in Assam. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kamakhya and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple is known for its unique architecture and beautiful surroundings. In the afternoon, visit the Assam State Museum, which houses a collection of rare objects, including ancient manuscripts, sculptures, paintings, and textiles. In the evening, take a stroll along the Brahmaputra River and enjoy the sunset.

  2. Day 2: Kaziranga National Park
    4 hours (190 km) from Guwahati

    Early in the morning, head to Kaziranga National Park, the home to the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. Take a jeep safari to explore the park and spot other animals, such as elephants, tigers, and water buffalo. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Orchid and Biodiversity Park and learn about the flora and fauna of Assam. In the evening, watch a cultural performance by a local dance group.

  3. Day 3: Majuli Island
    2 hours 45 minutes (120 km) from Kaziranga National Park

    Take an early morning ferry to Majuli Island, the largest river island in the world. Visit the various Satras (Vaishnavite monasteries) on the island and learn about their history and culture. In the afternoon, take a bicycle tour of the island and explore the picturesque villages and paddy fields. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Assamese meal at a local restaurant.

  4. Day 4: Sivasagar
    6 hours (360 km) from Majuli Island

    Visit Sivasagar, the ancient capital of the Ahom Kingdom. Visit the Sivasagar Tank, which is the largest man-made tank in India, and the nearby temples, such as the Shiva Dol and the Vishnu Dol. In the afternoon, visit the Rang Ghar, which is one of the oldest amphitheaters in Asia, and the Talatal Ghar, which is an ancient palace. In the evening, head back to Guwahati.

Recommendations

Assam has many other attractions, such as the Manas National Park, the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. You can also take a tea plantation tour or a river cruise on the Brahmaputra River. If you have more time, take a side trip to the neighboring state of Meghalaya and visit the picturesque town of Shillong and the Living Root Bridges.

To maximize your fun, make sure to try the local cuisine, such as the Assamese Thali, which consists of rice, dal, fish, and vegetables. You can also try the traditional rice beer, called Apong. Don't forget to shop for Assamese silk and handicrafts, such as the bamboo and cane products.
