Pondicherry Family-Friendly Itinerary - August 2023

  1. 9:00AM: Auroville

    Auroville, an experimental township, promotes human unity and international harmony. Visit the famous Matrimandir, an architectural marvel, and the beautiful gardens and forests around it. Bookings for Matrimandir visits must be made in advance.

  2. 11:30AM: Paradise Beach
    20 minutes (7.8 km) from Auroville

    Paradise Beach is a secluded and serene beach accessible by boat from Chunnambar Boat House. Enjoy the boat ride, play in the sand, swim in the clean waters, and take in the picturesque views. Carry your own food and water as there are no facilities available.

  3. 2:00PM: Sri Aurobindo Ashram
    30 minutes (10.2 km) from Paradise Beach

    The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community founded by Sri Aurobindo and his followers. Visit the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, explore the library, and participate in the meditation sessions. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the ashram.

  4. 4:30PM: Botanical Garden
    10 minutes (1.8 km) from Sri Aurobindo Ashram

    The Botanical Garden, established in 1826, is home to a variety of exotic plants and trees, including a fossil of an ancient tree. Walk the pathways, relax on the benches, and admire the beauty of nature. The garden is open from 10AM to 5PM.

  5. 6:00PM: Pondicherry Beach
    20 minutes (4.5 km) from Botanical Garden

    Pondicherry Beach, also known as Promenade Beach, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Stroll on the beach, watch the sunset, and enjoy the street food and souvenir shops. The beach is open 24/7.

Recommendations

Other attractions worth visiting are the Chunnambar Boat House, the French War Memorial, and the Ousteri Lake. Take a side trip to Mahabalipuram, known for its UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas. To maximize your fun, rent a bicycle and explore the city at your own pace. Don't forget to try the local cuisine, especially the French delicacies.
