Meghalaya Itinerary for July 2023

  1. Day 1: Shillong
    30 minutes (7.5 miles) from Shillong Airport

    Start your day by visiting the Elephant Falls, a popular tourist attraction. Then, head to the Shillong Peak for some stunning views of the city. In the evening, explore the local markets and try some street food.

  2. Day 2: Cherrapunji
    2 hours (37 miles) from Shillong

    Visit the Mawsmai Cave, a natural wonder with limestone formations. After that, head to the Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Finish your day by exploring the living root bridges in the area.

  3. Day 3: Mawlynnong
    2 hours 15 minutes (55 miles) from Cherrapunji

    Visit the cleanest village in Asia and explore its beautiful gardens and treehouses. You can also take a short trek to the nearby Balancing Rock. In the evening, head back to Cherrapunji for the night.

  4. Day 4: Dawki
    2 hours 30 minutes (66 miles) from Cherrapunji

    Take a boat ride in the crystal clear waters of the Umngot River, which forms the natural border between India and Bangladesh. You can also visit the nearby Mawlynnong Waterfall and the Indo-Bangladesh Border.

  5. Day 5: Nongpoh
    2 hours (36 miles) from Dawki

    Visit the Lum Sohpetbneng Peak, a sacred mountain for the Khasi tribe. You can also visit the nearby U Soso Tham Museum, which houses artifacts related to the famous Khasi poet. In the evening, head back to Shillong.

  6. Day 6: Mawsynram
    2 hours (39 miles) from Shillong

    Visit the Mawjymbuin Cave, which houses a unique stalagmite formation in the shape of a Shivalinga. Then, visit the Mawsmai Falls and the Seven Sisters Falls, both of which are popular tourist attractions. In the evening, head back to Shillong.

  7. Day 7: Shillong
    30 minutes (7.5 miles) from Shillong Airport

    Spend your last day exploring the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, which houses a museum and research centre dedicated to the indigenous cultures of Northeast India. In the evening, catch a live music performance at one of the city's many cafes.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider taking a side trip to the Laitlum Canyons, which offer stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. You can also explore the local cuisine by trying some of the traditional Khasi dishes, such as Jadoh and Dohkhlieh. Lastly, make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing, as the weather can be unpredictable in Meghalaya.
