3-Day Itinerary for Pondicherry in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Explore Pondicherry's French Quarter
    15 minutes (2 miles) from Pondicherry Railway Station

    Start your morning with a visit to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community dedicated to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Afterward, stroll through the charming streets of the French Quarter, admiring the colonial architecture and browsing the boutiques and art galleries. Stop for lunch at one of the many French cafes or Creole restaurants. In the afternoon, visit the Pondicherry Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the region. In the evening, catch a performance at the Alliance Francaise or enjoy a sunset stroll along the Promenade beach.

  2. Day 2: Auroville and Matrimandir
    20 minutes (5 miles) from the French Quarter

    Drive to Auroville, an experimental community founded on the principles of human unity and spiritual consciousness. Take a guided tour of the Matrimandir, a unique structure designed to facilitate deep meditation. Afterward, explore the beautiful gardens and sustainable living projects of Auroville. For lunch, try some organic vegetarian cuisine at one of the community's many cafes. In the afternoon, visit the nearby beach town of Serenity Beach for some sun and sand.   3. Day 3: Temples and Nature

    Start your day with a visit to the ancient Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to the Hindu elephant god Ganesh. Then, venture to the nearby Arikamedu archaeological site to learn about the region's ancient Roman trade connections. For lunch, try some delicious seafood at the Paradise Beach Shack. In the afternoon, head to the Ousteri Lake Bird Sanctuary to observe a variety of migratory birds and enjoy the serene natural surroundings. In the evening, catch a Bollywood movie at the Chitra Cinema or enjoy some live music at the Seagulls pub.

If you have extra time, consider taking a day trip to Gingee Fort, an impressive hilltop fortress with stunning views. You can also try a boat tour of the Chunnambar backwaters or take a cooking class to learn how to make traditional South Indian dishes.
