Exploring the South - Pondicherry to Kochin in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahabalipuram
    2 hours 20 minutes (100 km) from Pondicherry

    In the morning, visit the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site - Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. Check out the Shore Temple, Five Rathas, and the intricately carved Arjuna's Penance. Enjoy some seafood for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, spend some time at the beach, or visit the Crocodile Bank to see these magnificent reptiles. In the evening, head to the Mahabalipuram Dance Festival which takes place in the months of January and February.

  2. Day 2: Chennai
    1 hour 30 minutes (60 km) from Mahabalipuram

    Start the day by visiting the famous Kapaleeswarar Temple and then head to the Government Museum to witness a fascinating collection of art, archaeology, and natural history. In the afternoon, visit the Fort St. George and the nearby St. Mary's Church. Take a stroll in the beautiful Marina Beach, and enjoy some filter coffee and snacks at a local cafe. In the evening, watch a movie at the iconic Devi Theatre.

  3. Day 3: Kochin
    12 hours 30 minutes (700 km) from Chennai

    Take an early morning flight from Chennai to Kochin. Visit the famous Chinese Fishing Nets and the adjacent Fish Market in Fort Kochi. Walk around the historic Mattancherry Palace, and explore the spice markets in the Jew Street. In the afternoon, experience the Kalaripayattu martial arts performance at the Kerala Kathakali Centre. Enjoy some traditional Kerala cuisine for dinner at a local restaurant. In the evening, take a relaxing sunset cruise on the backwaters of Kochin.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the backwaters of Alleppey, or taking a trek in the Western Ghats. Side trips to Munnar or Thekkady can also be planned. To maximize your fun, try local delicacies, buy some souvenirs like spices, tea or handicrafts, and take lots of pictures! Additionally, plan your itinerary around the monsoon season and witness the lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls in the region.
