Darjeeling-Gangtok 4-day Adventure Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Darjeeling
    10 minutes (2.7 km) from Darjeeling Railway Station

    Start your day with a sunrise view of the magnificent Himalayan range from the Tiger Hill. Enjoy a hot cup of Darjeeling tea and explore the Ghoom Monastery on your way back. After breakfast, visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park to spot some rare species of Himalayan fauna. In the afternoon, take a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway also known as the 'Toy Train' to enjoy scenic views of the tea gardens and hills. In the evening, take a walk around the Mall Road and shop for some locally made handicrafts.

  2. Day 2: Gangtok
    3 hours (97 km) from Darjeeling

    Start your day by visiting the Rumtek Monastery, one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim. From there, head to the Tsomgo Lake, a glacial lake located at an altitude of 12,400 ft. Spend some time boating on the lake and take a yak ride. After lunch, visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to learn about the history and culture of Tibet. End your day with a visit to the Ban Jhakri Falls, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush greenery.

  3. Day 3: Nathu La Pass
    2 hours (54 km) from Gangtok

    Start your day early to visit the Nathu La Pass, a mountain pass on the Indo-China border. You'll need a permit to visit the pass, so make sure to apply in advance. Once you reach the pass, enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas and visit the border trade market. On your way back, stop at the Baba Mandir, a temple dedicated to an Indian soldier who died near the Nathu La Pass. In the evening, return to Gangtok and take a cable car ride for a bird's eye view of the city.

  4. Day 4: Adventure Sports
    30 minutes (15 km) from Gangtok

    Start your day with an adrenaline rush by trying out some adventure sports like paragliding, river rafting or zip-lining. Head to the Sikkim Paragliding Adventure Sports Cooperative Society to get started. After lunch, visit the Enchey Monastery, a 200-year-old monastery known for its architecture and religious significance. In the evening, take a stroll around the MG Marg, the main shopping street of Gangtok, and try some local street food.

Recommendations

If you have some extra time, you can visit the Pelling town, located 3 hours (109 km) from Gangtok, to witness the scenic beauty of the Kanchenjunga mountain range. You can also visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling to learn about mountaineering and rock climbing. For the foodies, try some momos, thukpa, and other local delicacies at the various street vendors and restaurants. To maximize your fun, try to get an early start to avoid traffic and long queues at the attractions.
