4-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Ujjain in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    In the morning, visit the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. It is believed to be the only one facing south and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Afternoon, explore the Vedh Shala Observatory, which houses ancient astronomical instruments. In the evening, attend the Bhashma Aarti, a ritual where the deity is covered with ash.

  2. Day 2: Kaliadeh Palace and Ram Ghat
    30 minutes (6.2 miles) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start the day with a visit to Kaliadeh Palace, built on the banks of the Shipra River. It is said that Lord Krishna visited this palace during his lifetime. In the afternoon, go to Ram Ghat, a series of steps leading to the river, where you can take a boat ride and witness the evening aarti ceremony. In the evening, explore the nearby night market.

  3. Day 3: Sandipani Ashram and Bhartrihari Caves
    20 minutes (3.9 miles) from Ram Ghat

    Visit the Sandipani Ashram in the morning, where Lord Krishna and Sudama were believed to have studied together. It is now an educational institution. In the afternoon, explore the nearby Bhartrihari Caves, where the great poet Bhartrihari is believed to have meditated. In the evening, enjoy a Kathak dance performance at the Kalidas Academy.

  4. Day 4: Harsiddhi Temple and Mangalnath Temple
    20 minutes (3.4 miles) from Bhartrihari Caves

    Begin the day with a visit to Harsiddhi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Shakti. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India and has beautiful carvings and sculptures. In the afternoon, go to Mangalnath Temple, considered one of the most ancient temples in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also an important spot for studying astronomy. In the evening, enjoy a relaxing walk in the nearby Kaliyadeh Forest Park.
